The catalyst for this project actually started when a student simply asked me: "So Paul, when you're at home, what do you play?" I thought to myself about how I too wondered what my teachers would play, using their skills to actually create in the intimate privacy of their own musical experiences. I said "That's a great Idea for a CD!" And so, I simply used my students quote as the project name and inspiration: "What do you Play?"
This CD is a window into my most intimate playing experiences. After composing so much for ensemble and quartets, I missed working with the very thing I love most: Solo guitar work. No other instruments, just a pure experience with the instrument and music that I speak most fluently. Simply put: "Flamenco. Blues. Stuff." This is the music I play when I come home to use my experience and education for personal enjoyment or, to share with friends and family.
This CD features mostly pure, solo guitar work, along with 4 duets featuring one of my most experienced students, Joel Cornell. The CD is available at Matt's Pro Guitar, directly ( Paulslessons@gmail.com ) or wherever local music is sold.
